Pump & dumps are pretty sketchy, but there's an opportunity to make a lot of money.
They can happen both in cryptocurrencies as well as stocks, but regardless of the platform, they always have two things in common:
1) They are price manipulations that are driven up based on hype and/or news
2) The underlying stock or currency has very little value, and certainly not enough to justify the massive increases in price.
They can be an extremely effective but underhanded way for companies to make a lot of money by taking advantage of investors. All they have to do is release news to spike the price of the stock up, issue a bunch of new shares and sell them to greedy traders who are buying the stock after it's already up 100%+, and then they get a bunch of money.
The price tanks because the shares are diluted, so they do what's called a reverse split. That's the opposite of the 1-5 stock split that Tesla just did. Instead, they take many stocks and combine them into one stock to raise the overall price of the stock. This not only fools investors into thinking the stock isn't as sketchy as it really is, but it is also helps to maintain the standards necessary for listing on many exchanges. For example, if your NYSE stock is under $1 for 30 consecutive days, it will be removed.
Anyways, to take advantage of these plays, you can either buy them on the front end, taking care to react quickly to the news but not do so before the movement is confirmed, or you can short the stock once it hits its peak and is confirmed to come down (use the top of the peak as your stop loss).
You have to be extra careful when shorting a stock because the potential for loss is UNLIMITED. If you buy a stock, the absolute worst case scenario is that it goes to $0 and you lose 100% of your investment. With shorting, you can theoretically lose 10000000000000%. But your broker will force you to buy in before that happens, which can put your trades in a sticky situation if you're trying to wait it out.
I was able to notice the trend on TikTok for DogeCoin and buy in early enough in the pump stage that I was able to make nearly 100% on my money overnight. That's the best way to do it. If you're chasing the stock, you're developing a strategy that will only lose you money in the long run.

Pump-and-dump is an illegal scheme to boost a stock's price based on false, misleading or greatly exaggerated statements. Pump-and-dump schemes usually target micro- and small-cap stocks. People found guilty of running pump-and-dump schemes are subject to heavy fines
