Fuck the CCP is all I have to say when I think about Hong Kong these days.

That's China's own business.
You want to interfere, unless you have the strength to defeat China.
Hong Kong will continue to follow the path of capitalism until 2047.
China will always follow the path of socialism.

It’s racism that makes Britain end up losing Hong Kong, had they really treat Hong Kong people as equals, they would give them British citizenship right after the opium war, and Hong Kong would be fully integrated into the UK long before any handover ever become possible. Instead, they hypothetically give Hong Kong people some “special overseas passport” in 1985 shortly before ceding back the territory. Waited for some 140 years and still don’t intend to treat the Hong Kong people as equal human being. It’s so comforting to watch the handover, watch those colonial racists running home with tails between their legs.

'Democratic government'

jie yu

There are serious errors in the video. Hong Kong had no democracy and electoral system before returning to China. From judges to governors in Hong Kong, they are appointed by the British government, not elected by Hong Kong people.

I am pro capitalist, but seeing the Brit flag goes down its so great. Bye Sailors.

We should have kept Hong Kong.

“Hong Kong way of life and democratic government will continue”. Please cut the rubbish. HK was never democratic and we never had democracy so pls stop spreading a twisted western narrative.

In 1840, the defeated treaty of a small island was perpetually owned by Britain.
Then there was another war, which caused Britain at its peak before World War I to own some other large islands of an empire 8,000 kilometers away. It was leased for 99 years.

Then in 1984, China and Britain reached a consensus under the changing conditions of the international situation and their own strength, and China obtained all sovereignty of Hong Kong. Governance power belongs to the Hong Kong government, and two systems in one country finally take shape.
Of course, the consequence is that the United Kingdom has long passed laws, education, finance, ideology, and media to control Hong Kong by cutting off military control. The Hong Kong issue eventually broke out in 2019. (Sino-American War)
China finally began to abandon Hong Kong's own financial and ideological education system, and began to believe that sovereignty was not enough, and that all governance powers could not be delegated to a border territory that was deeply affected by colonialism.
There are too many loopholes here, which will give any adversary who wants to divide the territory a chance to snoop.

The Hong Kong issue is a war of division in the context of the new Sino-US Cold War. Part of it comes from the long-term separatist education influence of the former colonial sovereign state (UK), which has spread to the hearts of Hong Kong people in the 21st century. Until this idea was once again used by the new colonialist and imperialist America.
It’s just that this time it’s not British warships and artillery, it’s not invading China’s Yangtze River, it’s not bombarding Chinese civilian residences, intercepting China’s canal passages, and preventing the Chinese government’s extremely difficult economic situation. It requires a lot of taxation, forcing China to surrender, and signing land cede treaty.
Instead, using the peaceful evolution methods familiar to the United States, the large-scale radio stations set up by the United States in Western Europe-"Radio Free Europe" and "Radio Freedom", through the influence of the Soviet Union, Poland and other Eastern European countries, especially the youth of the world, the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe The important information that occurred in the country introduced the achievements, life and values of Western society, and the methods that led to the collapse of the Soviet Union.
In the 21st century, through the new era of Facebook, Twitter, and other new Internet technologies, the delivery and transmission of information will eventually set off large-scale riots and demonstrations. China has to go back and study the separatism and separatism that has always existed in Hong Kong. It cannot continue to ignore it and allow their thinking to continue to be controlled by the West.
On May 20, 2020, the US government submitted a phased work report entitled "The United States of America's Strategic Path to the People's Republic of China". This report can be regarded as a temporary summary of the Trump administration's China strategy since taking office.
"Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States in 1979, the U.S. policy toward China is largely based on the hope that deepening contacts will promote China's comprehensive economic and political opening up and promote China to become a constructive and responsible Global stakeholders, and build a more open society."
This is tantamount to saying that the development of U.S.-China relations, in the opinion of the author of this report, is to promote peaceful evolution in China and promote China's dramatic changes like the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, as well as the evaluation criteria. And when China apparently rejected this outcome, which was tantamount to substantive suicide, the United States actually said that "this harmed the vital interests of the United States, and also harmed the sovereignty and personal dignity of all countries in the world." From these words, there is no ideological prejudice and no normal people suffering from Stockholm syndrome and other mental illnesses. You can feel that the "giant baby" mentality of the core decision makers of the US government has reached a certain distortion and abnormality. Point.
But there is one point. In this report, the United States officially recognized the failure of the peaceful evolution of China in 40 years. This is the only information that can be valued.

Back in Hong Kong, in the new Sino-US Cold War, it was only a partial conflict. But the consequences are far-reaching. In mainland China, a large Asian country with a land area of 9.6 million square kilometers, among the 1.4 billion Chinese people, most of the trust in the United States has disappeared. The US government has never forgotten to intervene in China's sovereignty, and its attempts to split China have never stopped seeing real images, which has given the Chinese people a very big impact. The Communist Party of China has always been sober since 1935, facing the Kuomintang, the Japanese government, the Soviet government, and the U.S. government. The attitude and approach to the international situation is consistent, that is, national interests are above all else.
Hong Kong has an area of 1,106 square kilometers, standing between China’s 9.6 million square kilometers and the United States’ 9.83 million square kilometers. Its role has caused the biggest failure of Sino-US strategic mutual trust since 1971.

liew william

Hong Kong is China. What makes HK a vibrant and business hub are the people during the 150 years British rule. HK is definitely be more vibrant and efficient under it's own government and China.

i finally know why my family has decided to move to nz now. history is amazing!

Such mass migrations of people out of Hong Kong definitely reveal a lot about how China treats its own people. While being increasingly capitalistic, China is still under a communist regime.
To me, as an American, this is a sort of relic of the Cold War. Most communist regimes have already collapsed and the nations have embraced more democratic and capitalist ideals. Yet, China is still clinging onto an old, failed ideology.
Regardless, younger generations are waking up and desiring the same freedom and prosperity Americans enjoy.

You state that the British Hong Kong passport was introduced in 1985. So what type of passport do you imagine the citizens of Hong Kong travelled on prior to that? There may have been a cosmetic change in the actual wording of the Nationality in 1985, from British Dependent Territories Citizen to British National (Overseas), but while Hong Kong was British, citizens of Hing Kong have always travelled on British passports like the one pictured which did not give them the right to live or work in the UK.

Commentators, come on. Don't argue and quarrel. Just accept the fact that HK is China. And that the British is no more an empire. They are no match in economy and military with great China. There should be no more white supremacy anymore. THE Asians are catching up. Many whites are finding jobs in Asia. Period.

Yeah I agree there should be more debate about Taiwan's status. However I don't think PRC is to blame for the lack of it because it is decades of Western MSM's brainwashing that have made average Westerners automatically assuming Taiwan is a country. It's a shame that governments of Western nations pretend to agree with One China because they want to do business while at the same time secretly advocate otherwise.

The visual change actually somehow resembled those of the U.S. at its independence from U.K. Even the term "Anglican Church" was considered "too British" and has to be changed to "Episcopal Church"

impressive how smoothly it happened. Shame people still have to wait 30 years until some real reform can be done but at least by then china will be a strong, almost developed economy that can make some magic happen very quickly.

It's interesting to think about what would have happened if the ROC (Taiwan) focused on keeping the PRC out of the UN, or just maintaining British/Portugese recognition until the deadline. Imagine if Hong Kong and Macau were handed over to the ROC instead.

Hey all, in case you don't know already, the numbers in the bottom, left corner of the video correspond to the sources of information at the bottom of the description. Many of those are good further reading on the topic.

Also, I just want to acknowledge one small narration slip-up. At 7:14 I say, "What was known was that the event would be centered around midnight on the night of July 30th, 1997." That should be June 30th, 1997.

This was really sad to watch in 2021 after seeing how effectively China has quashed the notion of semi-autonomy, and how much it's hurting the people in Hong Kong. It would be great if you could make an updated video describing some of the nuances and implications of the current political situation in Hong Kong.

The reason for the return of Hong Kong was that Britain could not afford to continue to colonize Hong Kong, and if China ended British rule violently then all that Britain had in Hong Kong would be lost. Margaret Thatcher won twelve years for the British

I'm so happy that you continued with the series! I totally agree that Throne of Glass was a little hard to get into, but the plot of Crown of Midnight is SO much better! And, honestly the series really gets so so much better with every single book!! Awesome review! :)

Do you get sponsored to do this?

I'M SOOO HAPPY U LOVED IT! Heir of fire was the best in the series untill queen of shadows came out. U explore a lot more of the magic world in book 3! I feel like u might not like queen of shadows cuz of what u said about some characters. Eek I hope u still like it that book made me sooo happy on so many levels I was squealing with happiness the whole time reading it. It's one of the few books that actually gave me physical reactions to a lot of things that happened, I screamed and squealed and laughed soo hard. I love love love that book :].

Love the show..Can't get enough of it and its Free! Keep up the great work.

Emily Hornburg

I"m just so happy you liked this one more that Throne of Glass. I think you'll like the next one even more.

Jeffrey Halvorsen

I genuinely and consistently like the advice you folks have to offer on your channel, but this game-show-style presentation in Free For All feels pretty unnecessarily tacky.  You could get this information across in half as much time as you used in this video.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I just feel the series continue to get better!
