The New Jersey black sea
The New Jersey black sea bass season is officially underway, and while stiff south winds didn’t make the May 27th opener very accommodating, the weekend is shaping up to be a stellar one with good crowds expected along the party boat rails in search of those big, hungry biscuits left untouched for the past six months.
Inshore, it looks like great tide and weather conditions to get out early morning especially in search of weakfish, striped bass, bluefish and fluke for some Grand Slam opportunities in the back bay. Outgoing water in the morning bodes well for the summer flounder bite, particularly the last couple of hours, as water gets warm and big flatties feed on shrimp and fish tumbling off the grass beds and out of the feeder creeks. Meanwhile, the quiet morning and flood tide along the banks has been producing a few tiderunner weakfish for those tossing pink plastics.
A few smaller stripers are in the mix as well in the back bay, although those looking for trophy linesides are gearing up with wireline from Barnegat Inlet north to the Shrewsbury rocks or searching for active bunker schools along the coast where 40-pound and over bass are picking up live ones.
Bluefish continue their marauding ways with more catches along the front beaches to surfcasters soaking chunks. Delaware Bay summer flounder action has been good on both sides, while the drum bite seems to be slowing up a bit off the West Side of Cape May County. Big drum continue to be reported on the Raritan Bay which are in the mix and surprising fluke fishermen, who have already topped the 10-pound ‘trophy’ mark on flatfish.
