FOR ANYONE NEW: HODL IS NOT AN ACRONYM.

It was a misspelling of "hold" by a VERY drunk person who demanded that he wasn't smart enough to day-trade, and neither were most people. Thus, he was going to "hold" on to his money.

However, he was VERY drunk and wrote "hodl".

Here's the origin: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=375643.0?red

Off topic but very serious. Beware of online crypto traders. They are mostly scams and there's hundreds of them growing as fast as crypto ICO's. Here's how they suck you in no matter how smart you might profess to be. They have a glitzy web site and they talk the talk but they only want you to invest a little bit as a test, which you do. You then get a screen that makes it look like you've just been scammed because it shows the wrong balance and you can't get a response from the refund button. You panic and get disgusted with yourself because you realize you've been scammed. Lo and behold the phone rings after a couple of hours of you kicking yourself. It's them. They're back... apologizing for the computer glitch that caused the false reading and the outage, and it has now been fixed and in the interim they have traded your thousand dollars and turned a profit and the crypto is now safely lodged with them and you now get to see it on the screen with profit, trades and all. You get two emotional rewards right there. You breathe a sigh of relief that it wasn't the scam you thought it was and also you just made a profit. In your mind they are now legit and successful traders but they've just suckered you. Now they suggest that you invest a bit more for just a week to see how it goes and you then have the option to take it out or join one of their time locked options that start at five thousand dollars up to a million. You do (not a million). A free week of trading sounds great. You even put in some more because they came back with such a realistic profit. Then the whole thing just goes blank... no contact. Your crypto has gone. It's in their wallet which they made out to be yours on their trading panel. You find out they are registered in AN OFFSHORE ACCOUNT. Make sure any trader is SEC approved first. You don't want to know how they got your email. That's even scarier.

buy one ~1btc and hold for 5years. by then you probably never have to work again. the risk-reward ratio is insanely good even if you could lose everything whats still pretty unlikely.

ye! even the old guys get it now ;-) ... we will make this world a better place!

Sounds like the government is starting to see potential of it. Which imo means they will start using it themselves and regulate the heck out of it. I don't see this as good news for Bitcoin... I think it is great that we might start actually adopting this technology more though.
