This video explains what
This video explains what the process approach to auditing really is. It's not just auditing a process. You are systematically auditing a process, using a step-by-step method that identifies the inputs to the process, the outputs of the process, and how the process interacts with other processes. You learn how to create a turtle diagram, and then we repeat the instruction for an incoming inspection process, and then for storing raw materials in your warehouse, and finally for the process of filling your car up with gas. You will learn how to create a report from your turtle diagram as well. This 7-step diagram is much simpler to teach new auditors than a regulatory checklist, and the process approach will ensure that you cover more clauses of the standard. Specifically, the process approach will ensure that you have multiple records to sample for training, document control, maintenance, process validation, and training. “Turtle Diagram” is an
“Turtle Diagram” is an effective method/tool for process auditing as it helps the auditor visualise the different process characteristics from inputs to outputs. Processes are made up of inputs, outputs, criteria, resources, risks, metrics and others, and a Turtle Diagram clearly illustrates a process as to how it should be implemented and improved. From the name itself, the diagram looks like the body of a turtle, with different components as body, legs, head, as well as its tail. This is commonly used during internal quality audit of ISO 9001:2015 QMS.
This is a very effective memory aid for auditors conducting process audit where audit interviews can begin mentally from the head of the turtle, to its legs and finishing off on the tail. Each part is represented by the different characteristics of the process. This is a very helpful tool in conducting internal audit for ISO 9001:2015 QMS
During internal audit of ISO 9001:2015 QMS, Turtle Diagrams allow the auditor to visualize the entire process, including communication and mapping of interrelated processes. This tool can help both process auditor and auditee better understand the process. The diagram helps layout the framework in an easy to follow manner, and can identify significant gaps in the organization’s structure making it an effective tool for process auditing.

Thank you for this webinar. Its a great help for my first internal audit tomorrow
Comment below on which element of the turtle diagram you find useful in process audit...
Thank you very much...It was quite helpful
Thank you Sir. Thanks AGF for this new input. <3
1. Ask the auditee to explain the process
2. Confirm the actual process vs procedure/guideline
- inspect records or documents
- verify existence
- observe actual activity of process
Remember 5M1E when doing the actual process audit
Man - who? (w/ training? authorized?, etc.,)
Machine - what? how? (calibrated? maintained? etc.,)
Material - what? (w/in specification? current? etc.,)
Method - who? how? what? (who performs? how is it performed? correct method?, procedures, etc.,)
Measurement - how? when? (calibrated? correct tool? etc.,)
Environment - where? (correct area? customer required area? etc.,)
no turtle. no problem.
