Gladiator - Clip - Win the Crowd

593 771 views | 4 Dec. 2014

Proximo explains to

Proximo explains to Maximus how he'll win his freedom.

Gladiator is a 2000 British-American epic historical drama film directed by Ridley Scott, starring Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Ralf Möller, Oliver Reed (in his final film role), Djimon Hounsou, Derek Jacobi, John Shrapnel, and Richard Harris. Crowe portrays the fictional character, loyal Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius, who is betrayed when the emperor Marcus Aurelius's ambitious son, Commodus, murders his father and seizes the throne. Reduced to slavery, Maximus rises through the ranks of the gladiatorial arena to avenge the murder of his family and his emperor.

I do not own any of this video's content. It belongs wholly to its rightful owners. It is solely for entertainment.

"I wasn't the best because I killed quickly, I was the best because the crowd loved me."

Andre McCree

people credit the actors. but it is so superbly staged, shot, and edited. it is probably ridley scott's best directed film.

Reed died from a heart attack during a break from filming Gladiator in Valletta, Malta, on the afternoon of 2 May 1999. According to witnesses, he drank eight pints of German lager, a dozen shots of rum, half a bottle of whiskey and a few shots of Hennessy cognac in a drinking match against a group of sailors on shore leave from HMS Cumberland at a local pub. His bar bill totaled a little over 270 Maltese lira (almost 450 GBP; about 594.72 USD). After beating five much younger Royal Navy sailors at arm-wrestling, Reed suddenly collapsed, dying while en route to hospital in an ambulance. He was 61 years old.

How dare 73 people dislike this scene!

Simply magnificent. RIP Oliver.

Próximo in his prime must be a great fighter

1:20 Proximo, getting lost in his memories and emotions. Oliver Reed, acting as though he lost his train of thoughts. Brilliant.

This is the greatest thing I have ever seen and I am a millennial look up the backstorys.

Win the crowd not Glory or money or pleasure

Thunder Rider

Yes Crowe won the Oscar for this Movie but Reed owned this scene. What a great actor he was

John Messina

I will win the crowd! I will give them something they've never seen before!!

Road 35

Poor Oliver Reed
Probably his greatest role and he passed away during the film was being made.

Oliver Reed.
Best actor in this film by far.
My God he saved his best until last.....God bless him ❤️️

Christopher Ojapah

To all young up comming actors oliver reed is a inspiration. This is one of the most powerful scenes ever made in a film. Give me chills. Epic

Nicholas Maggipinto

You knew Marcus Aurelius?! hahaha

Santeno Super

How me and Keith would talk. He was Reed and i was Crowe. Words of damn good reason

Oliver Reed gives his absolute best performance ; not knowing it would be his last. He died in the middle of shooting. They had to piece together an ending for his character. God bless.

Crowe is so natural .. reeds acting is good for an old style . Its a nice even

And then...when enough men have voted against him....perhaps Donald will be gone

sam hart

The best seem to always die young with problems I have only just really watched oliver reed and for some reason hes acting stands out to nothing I have ever seen ok i know hes not throwing hes self about like ab action hero but the intensity and passion he puts in is superb

Amazing that RC could easily play Proximo these days...

Probably Russell Crowe's best work. He would have made one hell of a Spartacus.

Oliver reed was prob the best actor of his he generation this scene proves it he was an alcoholic my mother told me and he was such a gifted actor what a man he was

Daniel Martins

Every Second of Oliver Reed in Gladiator is pure gold

This was a staggeringly good final performance for Oliver Reed.

jamie foyers

They had this show looking back at the "Noughties" last night, they mentioned Gladiator but it was "back in the bad old days" not like it is now. So it was mention other good movies but not this one since it's not "woke" enough. Annoyed the crap out of me!. Love this movie, complete classic. The themes in this movie and acting are just superb.

Raymond Valasquez

Was that the main guy's armor from when he was a general that the old guy threw at him? The main guy later tells the emperor's nephew that the two horses on the front of the armor were stolen from him.

One of the last truly captivating screen actors....when he talks....you listen....you simply cannot take your eyes off him....true master of his craft

B Viewer

"Win the crowd". What a legendary statement

Joesph Rhodes

Who would like a Proximo prequel?. I bet he was a badass

heinz elias4999

3:00 that lion or elephant on the bakground plus this beautiful Hans zimmer score plus the faces of these 2 brilliant actors makes these scene in particular way too badass and overwhelming

Dave Slamin

The best piece of acting of all time. Oliver Reed. Quite extraordinary and better than anyone else past or present...by a long way.

God, Oliver Reed was brilliant.

Asa Yagami

Shame Russell couldnt keep his weight in check, he should still be the starring or main leads in movies

When enough men have died, perhaps you will have your freedom.
Enough men have to be sacrificed and lose their lives for one man to get his freedom.

Tom Hamilton

Oliver Reed’s passion for his craft is so evident here. He truly did make the air move. Not forgotten....and he won the crowd. Peace.

Loved this scene!!

Mogus Monroe

Oliver Reed. Hard to get a stronger acting performance than this. RIP.

I learnt to love this man and his work after his passing, rest peacefully Oliver, thank you for your outstanding work and may your soul find peace eternally

Bojan Ćorović

Oliver Reed was not acting in this scene. He was LIVING his role. Perfection. Perfection in every way imaginable. May he rest in peace

Logan B

Men now adays need to use this scene as a metaphor. Live an above average life. Give the world something "they've never seen before!"

David Pritchard

A force of nature...

Save me a seat Oliver!

Marcus Porcius Cato

Something as simple as the guard following behind Maximus when he approaches Proximo really ground this movie in reality.

That moment wen he admits to having been a gladiator...he looks like the horrors he saw took him back. It humbled him.

Stupid Smart-Phone

Then there was the completely forgotten sequel: Sadiator. It was so depressing there's no record of it anywhere.

John Doe

Oliver goes full intense then dials it down and full intense again! Face expressions, body language, timing, all nuances! I love and miss this style of acting! It seems that big screen actors that have a busy background in theater and Broadway are the only ones that can channel this style of method acting!

Surge Álvarez

That guard with his hands on the hilt had no chill.

Absolutely fantastic acting though out, my favourite film...

Brian Nop

I keep re-watching this movie and thinking Anthony Hopkins could totally play Proximo...if Reed didn't exist lol

K. I. A

0:05 reward him with some man pussy. ?

I love the little flicker of anger on Proximo's face when Maximus laughs at him. Powerful acting.

Roshan Jayawardena

At the beginning of this scene Maximus wanders about showing absolutely no respect to Proximo, perceiving him merely as a businessman corrupted by greed to the point of dealing in death (https://youtu.be/le3xII5yKqE). Keeping his distance from Proximo, moving to the other side of the room as Proximo moves to his side of the room. But all of that changes as he draws near when Proximo begins discussing the new battlefield of the Colosseum.

Upon learning that Proximo reached the apex of the Gladiatorial sub-discipline of Warriorhood, at timestamp 2:14 onwards Proximo is finally given the respect he deserves. Maximus stands to attention and confirms the orders received from a Commander who has already trod the Warrior Path that he must also tread, just as a Colonel would as he stands before a General etc. Absolutely epic movie, discussing important themes related to the Warrior tradition using subtle details...11 out of 10.

Best scene

Alberto Rodriguez Fernandez

Plot Twist:

Proximo: "I met once Marcvs Aurelivs"

Spaniard: "Oh you did?Actually I used to date his daughter, you know, before my time as General of the Roman Army, before all this Gladiator stuff"

Proximo: "WTF?"

You know when maximus disobeys the emperors order and spares the retired gladiator. Thats Oliver reed voice which first screams "maximus the merciful" he helped him win the crowd.

I can't think of a better role (or performance) to have capped off Oliver Reed's life and career.

TJ Strong

What a fantastic scene, from one of the best movies ever--- the acting is the best.

Vin Chenzo

Oliver Reed:*(

Brandon McNamara

Best film of all time

Melt Music

...and in his life, Oliver Reed won the love of the crowd (the public) and was as free a man you will ever see

Vin Chenzo

Russell Crowe is no Bill Sykes

Roshan Jayawardena

This movie is deep on a whole other level, at timestamp 2:25 onwards notice the way Proximo places subtle emphasis when stating "Win the crown... and you'll WIN your freedom", this confirms that he understands Maximus does not seek freedom in a temporal or material sense but rather a mental or spiritual sense.

This hearkens back to the moment Maximus first arrives in the Lyceum and refuses to fight back at the initial assessment (https://youtu.be/nwoPiEc49is). Whereupon Proximo has a look of astonishment perhaps understanding that Maximus is no ordinary slave, that he has a higher calling.

Killer Caritas

I love this scene .

Jonathan Funnell

russell crowe is an excellent actor my favorite film of his is master and commander the far side of the world

orçun çiftci

A spin-off should be made for Proximo’s epic fights

Houassi Imed Eddine

Win respect it earned not given by petty

Deja Voodoo

Oliver Reed was the only man on Earth who could make Ozzy Osborne cringe

Eli Martinez

"Shhhhh! quiet woman!!!"

Rosalind Blair

I really love that when Russell Crowe asks 'Were you a gladiator?' Reed nods his head in this very shy, humble way, almost embarrassed. It's exactly like warriors in real life, old guys who have fought in war when you ask them about it they are always so self-effacing and so reticent to even claim their own greatness, maybe because they are jaded by loss and awareness of the senselessness of fighting that only comes from bitter experience. Reed almost looks childlike in his response there - it's so beautiful, so authentic, like he's not here to brag, but yes he was THE BEST GLADIATOR of his time lol. All delivered in one look. Some highly credible acting here.

Maximus Meridius

Stupid subtitles Destroyed the video.

Randomfully Wonderful

This dude was off the hook!

What a stud. Reed is a pucking monster.

nameless one

Reed was pure genius. Point. Blank. Period.

Randall Jones

Getting out of active duty in the Air Force soon, and watching this just gives me chills... this video sums it up for me.

I like how he puts his hands up at the end like that.

Aaron Matthew

Look how Russell Crowe is pacing back-and-forth and he’s treated like an animal.this is an amazing scene. Oliver reeds performance is beautiful and a standard of realism I hope to make it one day ❤️

IfYouScared GoToChurch

But Maximus really did know Marcus Ariellies, know who you're talking to is the lesson I learned

Anyone else found it somewhat comforting that Trump didn't actually do any rallies after the election? Like he didn't do his "victory lap" from last time or anything close to that. He just kinda made some speeches like he always does. I found that super comforting because it let me know that somewhere deep down in his soul, Trump truly knew that he was utterly fucked and just didn't know if he could do anything about it.

I have to point out that regardless of the party, some people overreact, then some of the other party act like all of them are overreacting, then the first party gets angrier at the second, then the second gets angrier at the first, and people get more divided. The same stuff happens in the other direction at the same time, and both parties try to act like they aren't doing it.

In 2016, the Republicans won, some Democrats threw a fit, and some Republicans called them out on it. In 2020, The democrats won, some Republicans threw a fit, and some Democrats called them out on it. Trump has done some good stuff and some bad stuff, and so has Biden, yet people act like one is all good and the other is all bad. The way liberal media talks about the right is identical to the way conservative media talks about the left, which tells me that neither of them are telling the whole truth at best and manipulating our opinions at worst.

Suffice it to say, I love my country, but I think it needs a psychiatrist.

<<<<<<<< Why IMPEACH Trump if he lost? Answer is Pelosi & Democrats are admitting that Trump IS the POTUS now, not Biden. Prove that Biden Won! Show us the evidense that Biden votes were legal!!! Biden got 26 million fake votes + 55 million stupid people real votes. Democrats need to prove that the 26 million fake votes are not fake. Media Says No Proof Of Election Fraud, Well Here's 3 States Worth of Proof
but there are over 31 million pieces of evidence of vote counting fraud and hundreds of thousands of voter fraud arrests pending separate trials in courts all over the USA

Whether it’s the mainstream media, Twitter, Facebook or any other platform with a leftist agenda, all you hear is that there is “no evidence” of election fraud.
Well, the Data Integrity Group (DIG) has showcased a mountain of evidence across several states and has so far released videos with their findings on Arizona, Georgia and Pennsylvania.
The goal of the group is to present irrefutable data. Sources for the raw data they used come from the Edison, Secretary of State, and SCYTL feeds which is what was used to certify the election totals.
Below is hard evidence from the data for those in the media and Democrats who continue to say there is no proof of fraud.
In this first slide the data scientists show negative votes across 15 counties in PA that total over 400,000 votes taken from President Trump. There is no question of whether or not this happened, this is the data used to verify the state–once again Edison, SOS and SCYTL data.

In the next two PA slides you can see in Allegheny County that absentee votes went up on a normal gradual scale for Joe Biden.
In Trumps slide you can see at the second time stamp there was an injection of 145,241 votes and then they are all taken away.

Trump’s Election Day votes in Allegheny were taken away as well at five different time intervals throughout the night, totaling over 25,000 votes which is confirmed across multiple data sources.

Here is Chester County PA where President Trump saw major decreases in votes across absentee and Election Day votes:

Lehigh County PA saw an over 66,000 vote drop for Trump:

Philadelphia has a history of corruption and this election looks no different. In this slide you can see the data shows Biden received a 47:1 vote ratio over Trump. Trump received 2,152 votes to Biden’s 100,236. In 278 precincts in Philadelphia it would mean 97 out of 100 people voted for Joe Biden. Some precincts showed 99% for Biden.

In Bibb County, GA you can see there was an exact vote switch between Trump and Biden of 12,173, giving Biden the lead.

When we asked local residents about these numbers in DeKalb they said it’s impossible that 9 out of 10 people voted for Biden in their county.

Fulton County seems to have as much corruption as Philadelphia. But strictly looking at the data, 170 out of 384 precincts in Fulton County voted 90% or more for Joe Biden.
Trump received only 9% of Election Day votes and 4% of absentee in Fulton. There were several counties that reported 100% for Biden. These numbers represent statistical anomalies that do not exist in normal behavioral patterns.

As you can see all the gray bars are relatively even, which is what you would encounter with normal vote distribution. Statistically speaking, the blue bars, which all represent the first batch of absentee votes for Biden, should be roughly in line with the grey bars. Instead the massive difference in votes between the first batch and the rest implies a potential front load of votes for Biden in order to secure his win in the state.
Questions and rebuttals arose that these spikes in the first drop came because more people early voted for Biden, but our second slide shows that there was an even amount of requests by Republicans for early vote ballots and an even amount of returns by Republicans which throws that argument out. Also these large early vote drops were not consistent across the state.
In order to make those numbers work Biden would have to have received 100% of the Democrats, 100% of the Independents and a large portion of the Republicans.
Sources confirm that 95% of registered republicans voted for Trump.

There is a large group of data scientist that are working on this data around the clock to showcase all the irregularities within the election.
Information on more states is still to come, including data on down ticket races.

But remember Coronavirus and George Floyd, because we learned from these as a nation that all of us (not just his usual sycophants) are human beings. Please Do A Piece on Michael Jackson
I’m writing to you because Last Week Tonight as opposed to other such shows actually cares about issues rather than chasing the headlines. It has been 11 years since Michael Jackson passed away yet to this day what the common consensus is that he is a taboo subject for many. I recall you guys once did a piece on Public Shaming. Michael Jackson was a genius, an abused child. He was strange. He was one of the few major stars from the 80s who came out of the 80s without a heroine addiction. He in his own way did many, Many strange things, but so do most other superstars. And more than others he actually cared. About children, about the earth. About the issues we are discussing to this day. While Icons like Freddy Mercury, Elvis Pressley, Prince, Beetles and many more are known for their good works, Michael is known for the something which he has repeatedly been acquitted for. It’s the truth that anyone looking for will find instantly but due to the “where there is smoke there is a fire” narrative, even 11 years after his death, the new media treats him like a criminal. All his trial pages are open for the public to read. He WAS weird. Making a ranch called neverland, hanging out with children. Trusting people he shouldn’t. But I urge you please cover him, hear beyond the noise like you guys often do. The most successful African American Artist of all time was a humble man child, who respected women, loved children and cared about our environment. He was not a heroine junkie, a private man who did not share his disease even all the way back in 1993 even though he was accused of wanting to become a “White Man”. He was eccentric. Hanging out with animals and caring about them. https://theobjectivestandard.com/2020/02/justice-for-michael-jackson/
This article covers multiple sources, some of which I had read previously. Michael Jackson was a multi talented millionaire pop star, who was not an alcoholic, was a caring father, a filial son, Treated women with respect, cared about the planet and it’s beings. The press that constantly kept DASHING him, had found a way to subvert their guilt. All those years of calling him a “Jacko”, “monkey” and many more hurtful things was justified if he was a paedophile. They NEEDED him to be guilty. Such a man cannot exist in Hollywood. Such public shaming had allowed and to this day allows Michael to be a victim to all this slander. Please do a piece, if not one that exonerates him then one that once and for all cements the fact the Michael Jackson, the greatest pop star, the first African American Idol was a paedophile. Not through unknown sources or flimsy headlines but through concrete proof. A news echoing in a closed chamber will not reach anyone, most fans who what to know the truth know it, other people will read the headlines but not the explanations. It’s about time the general public knows. Please do a piece on Michael, the blatant mistreatment by the media, The systematic racism he faced during his trials. Please don’t let the first African American Singer be remembered for the things he did not do, He was weird, weird enough to annoy Freddy Mercury with Bubbles feedbacks, weird enough to let kids crack raw eggs over Michael Jackson, Weird enough to play water balloons with children. But he was not a paedophile and the world needs to acknowledge that. He was in no way a “Perfect Human” but he tried his best to live right and we should not punish him for doing that.
On this year please exonerate this Black man, the Justice System has done it two decades ago, it’s about time everyone else does.
Please do a piece on Michael Jackson.

"I do not have time for losers." Brilliant!

I don't care what anyone says...the finale for the last season of The Apprentice was anything but boring.

This is an insanely good summary. Surprisingly thorough for a show like this. I watched every second, multiple news channels and shows, and Oliver and his crew covered almost all of the most memorable bits.

We were getting ready to win this election - oh, and then you didn´t. Well that clearly proves it, it must have been rigged then. Sooo glad this freak is gone!
